I started to write this while sitting at a truckstop waiting for my best friend caravan down to the Oregon Horse Center with me. For the first time ever we will have almost matching trailers, which differ only in the details. In the span of three years of actually owning horses I’ve gone from a tiny little black trailer that both Flash and I hated, to a nice little Morgan Built stock sided trailer, to a custom built Double D, which I refer to as the BMW’s of horse trailers. I’m watching Tarma eat hay out of her bag from the cameras and just my mind is boggled at what my life is these days.

Today I hauled my spicy chocolate mare down to the Oregon Horse Center in Eugene in that brand new trailer (still kinda shocked it’s actually here after dreaming of it for so long!) I rode said mare in a busy, obstacle filled arena, having many solid discussions on the way. Unfortunately we were running late for our slot, so we didn’t have time to warm up that we would have liked. Despite this, Tarma was a gem, handling most of the questions with varying degrees of care and grace. At first she didn’t want to go into the water, the brown murkiness of it is a bit much for some, but as soon as she stepped foot in it she was like “whatevs” and went through without issue several times.

My best friend and her mare had a bobble, but she recovered well. Her mare Rue is not a fan of water, and she struggled with the waterfall, which was difficult for a lot of horses. After we were done, I was talking to a friend’s mom who had driven down with her and Tarma became her new best friend. She was really soaking up the soothing grandma energy, giving some big yawns and licks and sticking her face in the poor woman’s chest.
The haul home was smooth as butter, Tarma ate from her haynet a good bit of the time and it was so reassuring to watch her on the cameras. I love my new trailer and can’t wait to futz and putter and get it set just right for us, and I’m happy our first but outing went so well.

Wow! You’ve just lived one of my dreams. Ever since I learned about the Oregon Horse Center’s mountain trail set up, I have wanted to go. Many years ago, I visited Eugene on a house-shopping trip. Unfortunately, I didn’t find anything in my price range so didn’t end up moving. How fun that you had a great experience there and that you are thrilled with your new trailer. Very happy for you!

I love trail courses, we have two year round ones in driving distance and then this one a few months of the year indoors. It was a good day for sure!

I have never seen a course like that! Since I’ve had few opportunities to ride and I‘m not part of the culture, that’s not surprising, I guess. Why do you shave Tarma’s chest? I’ve not seen that before, either.

It helps with cooling and sweating in winter, they can’t just take their thick winter coats off after a ride so we do trace clips to help them disperse heat, but leave enough coat to keep them warm.
